WARNING: The following article is a rewording of the press packet for Super Junior's upcoming album, with a few snippets (okay, maybe a lot) of the author's opinion. Did you get that? If you're a highly sensitive ELF who can't take bashing about Super Junior, don't read this page. Although that's not gonna stop you, is it?
The many-membered boy band Super Junior will make a comeback...as the "Real Super Junior". (Huh? But that's what their press packet says.) Their concept this time around is to truly display their vocal abilities (although some members have questionable talent) and show off the rugged sexiness (?!) of men in their 20s.With their 3rd album "SORRY, SORRY" dropping in stores on the 12th, Super Junior has been busy with promotional activities and appearances on variety shows. Their title track is a dance song, and like all the popular songs today, it has a repeated chorus of an English word (just like "nobody nobody", "gee gee gee gee", "honey honey honey"...). "SORRY, SORRY" is supposed to show the "true charisma" of Super Junior and change their image from their previous "cute" concept. Additionally, the "sorry sorry" chorus, quoted straight from the press packet, "shows their manly toughness".The goal of this album is for Super Junior to find their "center", and create an image unique to them. In their press release they stated they wanted a "color and talent of our own" and earn respect for their own talent. Leader Lee Teuk said,
"We've shown our variety of talents with our sub-units in genres like trot, ballads and summer dance hits. Although that was our advantage over others, I think our personal color switches too often and we don't have our own identity. We couldn't find our center, and this time, we want to do it properly. With songs like 'Rokkukko', we showed a bright image but this time we want a manlier stage like our song 'U'.
"Kang In piped up, "Our 1st and 2nd albums were good, but I was slightly suspicious of whether our perseverance and talent could show through 100%. I realised that there could be people who hated our music (bingo!) but this time, we've improved ourselves and I have assurance. When we heard this song, all of us were like, "This is it". We all agreed that this would be the song that shows people who Super Junior truly is."They also said that they would convert from the playful, funny image that they showed on variety shows.
Sung Min said, "We're known as a bright, happy group on programs, so our music seems to be 'light' and we didn't really get any respect for it. (Well, you don't exactly have deep, emotional songs...) We're not going to lower our image for our music, but we're going to make some changes so that our music and our personality as a group are consistent.
"All this emphasis on "manliness" and "vocal talent" really makes me want to laugh, but I guess this is Father SM's way of repackaging the group so that we'll stop thinking about them as a group of 13 gender-confused boys with one member who doesn't mind displaying his homosexuality over and over again and view them as 13 tough guys. Don't get me wrong; there are some really talented singers in Super Junior, but how are we supposed to judge their vocal ability if their "breakout" song is a bunch of techno-infused crap with their voices aided by electronic filters / digitally altered?
